The Station
Localisation
The Experimental Station for Research on Art and Life is situated in Silistea Snagovului, a village in Gruiu commune, 40 km. north of Bucharest, 20 km. south of Ploiesti, 25 km. from Henri Coanda International Airport, on the bank of Snagov Lake and near the Snagov forest protected area.
The village is populated by local peasants and farmers as well as by affluent people from Bucharest, who have built villas and either commute or live there permanently.
Within walking distance from the Station, two important landmarks can be reached: the 14th century Snagov Monastery, situated on a little island in the middle of the lake, and Snagov Palace, built in the 1930s and adapted by Nicolae Ceausescu as a protocol venue.
The Station is situated at the outskirts of the village, on a former agricultural field. Due to its position, the site fits the temperate-continental climate, with hot and dry summers and rough winters.
According to the Geotechnical Study, the soil is mostly argillaceous in the first 50 cm, with the substrate of brown silty dusty clay, with manganese and iron oxides. Topographically, the plot is relatively plane, without oscillations of level, with an approx. 1,2% inclination from NV-SE. The first groundwater is at -4,5 m under the soil level.
